In a resounding display of commitment to environmental stewardship, the management and staff of Brunei Methanol Company Sdn Bhd (“BMC”) came together on 21 September 2023 at the Berakas Forest Reserve, Biodiversity Park. This collaborative effort with Green Brunei demonstrates BMC’s active involvement in environmental initiatives and community engagement, aligning with the Brunei National Climate Change Policy goal of planting 500,000 new trees by 2035.

In attendance at the event as the guest of honour was Dato Seri Paduka Haji Khairuddin bin Haji Abdul Hamid, Deputy Minister of Finance and Economy (Economy) / BMC’s Deputy Chairman. Amongst those who also participated were His Excellency Maeda Toru, the Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Japan to Brunei Darussalam, BMC’s board member Ahmad Fathi bin Dato Paduka Haji Junaidi, Acting Managing Director of Petroleum Authority, Haji Kula bin Haji Metasan and other representatives from Petroleum Authority, the Department of Environment, Parks and Recreation (“JASTRe”) and the Safety, Health and Environment National Authority (“SHENA”).
The event commenced with prayers, followed by a welcoming speech delivered by BMC Chief Executive Officer, Mr. Jesús Enrique Mora Marín. In his address, Mr. Mora underlined BMC’s unwavering dedication to community enrichment and stressed the pressing need to reduce carbon footprints. He emphasized the significance of individual actions in making a difference, stating “We each hold a responsibility to give back to the community – by reducing our carbon footprint and promoting sustainable practices in everything we do.”
BMC planted a total of 100 tree saplings during the event, which concluded with a sense of accomplishment. As each sapling was carefully planted, participants left with a shared sense of purpose and a shared understanding that every tree represents an investment in a greener and more promising tomorrow.
